In her animated documentary, Anja Kofmel tries to reconstruct the fate of her cousin, a Swiss journalist who died in unexplained circumstances during the war in Croatia in the early 1990s. How did Chris end up so far from home, and why was he wearing the uniform of a notorious unit of foreign mercenaries when he died? What did a man—Ilich Ramírez Sánchez, better known as Carlos the Jackal—serving a life sentence in a French prison have to do with his death? The clues uncovered by the director lead unequivocally to international neo-fascist groups and intelligence agencies. The rhythm of this dark film is set by disturbing animations and carefully edited archives, brilliantly reflecting the atmosphere of a world of suspicious transactions and double agents. “In war, the choice is not between good and bad; it is between bad and very bad,” says one of the protagonists in the film, a mercenary.
